In 1880 the Christmas card had a new birth because one great London firm offered five hundred guineas in prizes for the most artistic designs and text for a Christmas card. Many of the great artists of the day responded with their best ideas. Also, in the nineteenth century, the British Post Office used to deliver cards right on Christmas morning.
And after that, the first Christmas stamp was released in Canada in 1898.
At that time, for more than 30 years (in late 1840s), Americans had to import Christmas greeting cards from England. The first lithographic shop was opened in 1875 by Louis Prang who printed the first line of U.S. Christmas cards. And already by 1881, Prang was producing more than five million Christmas cards each year.
By the beginning of the twentieth century, the custom of sending Christmas greeting card had spread all over Europe and had become especially popular in Germany. And in the 1910s and 1920s, homemade cards became very popular. But commonly they were given by hang because more often they were too delicate to send by mail.
Nowadays, Christmas greeting cards are very different: jokes, winter pictures, Father Christmas, or romantic scenes of life in past times.
But those pictures of first cards are timeless and simple: excited children around a Christmas tree, Nativity scenes, nature scenes and carolers singing in the snow. And surprisingly they are still in the highest demand today. |
